Whilst little was made public about the specific nature of OJ’s cancer battle, in May 2023, Simpson revealed via social media that he had ‘caught cancer’ and had to ‘do the whole chemo thing." However, fans assumed he was on the mend as he went on to post "It looks like I beat it." A statement which cast many spectators' minds back to the result of his infamous murder trial.
OJ Simpson's infamy far extended the football field, as he once stood accused of the double-murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. In what was often dubbed ‘the trail of the century’, OJ was acquitted for both murders in a broadcast viewed by 57 percent of all Americans and an expansive global audience. Despite his acquittal, to this date many still hold a belief that he was guilty for the murders and accordingly his death has been met with mixed emotions and commentary.
Whilst some mourn the death of who they believe to be one of America’s greatest athletes others are calling attention to the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman and wondering if justice will ever be brought to their families.
