The city of Goma was thrown into chaos on Saturday night after Mt. Nyiragongo erupted leaving millions worth of damage and destruction behind. The eruption was caused when fractures opened in the volcano's side, causing lava flows in various directions.

Although residents had been warned about the situation, many were reluctant to flee the city hoping the eruption would not happen.

It was only after the mountain erupted and Lava flew towards the City that residents started to flee to neighboring Rwanda.

One of the world most active Volcanoes

Mt. Nyiragongo is one of the world's most active volcanoes. It is located in the Virunga national parks just 12 km north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu.

Its eruptions created an eerie red glow in the sky, sending a wall of orange lava downhill towards the lakeside city of about 2 million people.

It is estimated that 15 were killed in the aftermath of the event, with nine of them being involved in an accident as they fled the disaster. Reporters say that this figure is likely to rise as more missing bodies are discovered.

The last time the mountain erupted was in 2002 where it kills 250 people and left another 12,000 homeless.

The Red Cross said that around 3000 fled into Rwanda on Saturday; many of them peasants and farmers with livestock. However, some began returning on Sunday as the eruption started to calm.
