A Netflix docu-series which depicts Queen Cleopatra VII as a black African has sparked huge controversy in the Egyptian communities.

A lawyer has even gone to the extent of filing a complaint that accuses the episode, African Queens: Queen Cleopatra‚ of violating media laws by trying to "erase the Egyptian identity".

A top archaeologist has come out and insisted that Queen Cleopatra was "light-skinned, not black"; however, the producer claimed that the queen's heritage was ‚highly debated. Adele James, the British actress who plays this version of Cleopatra, told enraged viewers "if you don't like the casting, don't watch the show." Zahi Hawass, the former Egyptian antiquities minister, claimed that portraying Cleopatra as a Black woman is falsifying facts‚ and said: "This is completely fake. Cleopatra was Greek, meaning that she was blonde, not Black. Egyptian media outlet, "Egypt Independent‚ shared parts of the ongoing legal complaint which reads, Most of what Netflix platform displays do not conform to Islamic and societal values and principles, especially Egyptian ones.The complaint also reportedly states that the Netflix docudrama promotes Afrocentrism and contradicts a lot of Egyptian history.The complaint ended by saying, ‚In order to preserve the Egyptian national and cultural identity among Egyptians all over the world there must be pride in the makings of such work. The series is set to release on Netflix next month.
