FAMILY OF JULIAN COLE REACH £1.2 SETTLEMENT AFTER HE WAS PARALYSED BY POLICE IN 2013

On 6 May 2013 Julian Cole, then aged 19, had been trying to re-enter Elements nightclub in Bedford in search of a refund after he was removed from the club. Cole, now 30, suffered with a broken neck and a damaged spinal cord after police came to intervene during the disturbance.

His injuries have since left Cole with brain damage and paralysis. Nearly 11 years later, his family have finally reached an out-of-court settlement with Bedfordshire police for £1.2 million. The deal meant the police force did not accept liability for the injuries, and the decision was approved at London's high court.

When making the decision to approve the settlement, Justice Martin Spencer said he had "no hesitation whatsoever". He went on to say: "The matter was compounded by a concerted attempt on behalf of the police officers involved to falsify their account of events,"

Cole was in his first year at the University of Bedfordshire at the time of the incident. A police misconduct hearing in 2018 found that three officers had been untruthful in their statements about Cole's arrest.

They claimed Cole was able to walk to the police van after they had tackled him to the ground, however, CCTV footage showed that he was in fact carried with his legs dragging on the floor. Although the police were dismissed for lying, but they avoided any criminal charges.
