The 15-year-old girl was racing with her friends when her hijab became caught in her go-kart, fatally strangling her.

In 2021, Ruwaida Adan was go-karting with friends from a summer school when her headscarf became entangled in the vehicle and pulled tightly around her neck, an inquest heard.The accident occurred just minutes into the go-karting race, which took place at Capital Karts in Barking, East London.The inquest heard that the victim should have been instructed to either remove or tuck away her hijab, as the venue has a policy that all loose clothing should be removed before driving.Zoe Cumberbatch, a youth worker for the summer camp, told jurors that the staff at Capital Karts failed to tell anyone to remove loose clothing or tuck in their hair.

The inquest also heard the kart was in poor condition and therefore should not have been driven, as moving parts of the vehicle were exposed with missing and damaged parts.

Additionally, no daily mechanics check was carried out on the day of the accident.

Ruwaida's family said she had only begun occasionally wearing a hijab near the time of her death and that she would have taken it off if asked to do so by staff.

Ruwaida was taken to the hospital on 6 August 2021, however, passed away four days later.The jury ruled Ruwaida's death as hypoxic brain injury and asphyxiation.

In a statement, Ruwaida's family described her as "sweet and compassionate to everyone she met", adding that she had the "most contagious laugh".

Her family also added "We miss Ruwaida every second of every day,"

Capital Karts issued a statement which read: "Everyone at Capital Karts was deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Miss Adan, and our sympathies are with her family and friends.

"We co-operated fully with the authorities in their investigation and reviewed all of our safety procedures following the accident.

"We confirm that we will respond to the coroner's request within the relevant time frame."
