HISTORIC TORY DEFEAT: RISHI SUNAK ACCEPTS RESPONSIBILITY AS LABOUR CLAIMS VICTORY

This comes as Sir Keir Starmer led the Labour Party to a landslide victory, securing a majority of 170 seats and positioning himself to take over as the UK’s Prime Minister.

Sunak, addressing his supporters, stated, "The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight. There is much to learn, and I take responsibility for the loss." This historic loss has seen the Tories reduced to 119 seats, a staggering decrease of more than 248 seats from their previous standing.

Major Losses Among Conservative Figures

The defeat has been particularly harsh for key Tory figures. Former Prime Minister Liz Truss lost her South West Norfolk seat by 630 votes to Labour. Among the notable Conservatives who have lost their seats are Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, Commons leader Penny Mordaunt, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, and former minister Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly commented on the party's significant losses, highlighting that many former Conservative voters had shifted their support to the Reform Party, which managed to secure four MPs, including its leader Nigel Farage. Farage, who won a seat at his eighth attempt in Clacton, declared, "This is just the first step of something that is going to stun all of you."

Surge for Labour and Other Parties

In his victory speech in London, Sir Keir Starmer expressed gratitude to Labour supporters and emphasised a message of hope and change. He stated, "The country was waking up to the 'sunlight of hope,' which was 'shining once again on a country with the opportunity after 14 years to get its future back.'"

The Liberal Democrats also made significant gains, surging to a record 70 MPs. Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey celebrated the achievement, calling it a "record-breaking night" and pledging to focus on issues like the NHS and social care. The Green Party of England and Wales secured four MPs, while the Scottish National Party (SNP) had a disappointing result, being reduced to just eight MPs.

Social Media Reaction

Amidst the political upheaval, social media personality Niko Omilana added a viral moment to the night. Omilana was seen holding up a sign with a large "L," symbolising a loss, and posted on Twitter (now known as X), "Farewell Rishi, hold this L," which quickly gained traction online.

This historic election signifies a dramatic shift in the UK's political landscape, ending the Conservative Party's long-standing dominance and ushering in a new era under Labour leadership.
