The husband of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Alec Baldwin and other staff that worked on the Rust film set.

In October last year, Baldwin was filming on the set of the western Rust at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He fired a gun that was being used as a prop which resulted in killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

The family lawyer, Brian Panish, confirmed legal papers have now been filed in the state's Santa Fe county. At a press conference, he said: "The lawsuit names Alec Baldwin and others who are responsible for the safety on the set and whose reckless behavior and cost cutting led to the senseless and tragic death of Halyna Hutchins."

An animated video that recreates the incident was also revealed at the press conference.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Matthew Hutchins, husband of late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, and the couple's 9-year-old son. It named about two dozen defendants in addition to Baldwin, including armourer Hannah Gutierrez Reed and assistant director David Halls.

Aaron Dyer who is a lawyer defending Baldwin and other Rust producers said: "Any claim that Alec was reckless is entirely false. He, Halyna and the rest of the crew relied on the statement by the two professionals responsible for checking the gun that it was a 'cold gun' - meaning there is no possibility of a discharge, blank or otherwise."

No criminal charges have been brought forward.
