Chris Kaba died in September after being shot by a police officer in South London
An inquest has been opened into Chris Kaba's death.Taking place at Inner south London Coroner's Court, the court heard that the unarmed 24 year old was driving an Audi that had been associated with a firearms incident the day before. However, Chris's name was not included in the briefing that had been given to the police.A marked police car then followed Chris before the shooting occurred and after he drove down Kirkstall Gardens, Chris was blocked by a marked police car. It's been said there was contact between the Audi and police vehicles.
The court then heard that an officer stood in front of the Audi after the police decided to perform an "extraction". A single shot was fired through the windscreen.Dean Brown, from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), told the hearing: "Armed officers exited the vehicle and approached the Audi driven by Mr Kaba."The evidence suggests contact was made between the Audi driven by Mr Kaba and police vehicles.
"The evidence further suggests (the officer) was stood in front of Mr Kaba's vehicle."Chris died just after midnight on September 6th after being taken to hospital. His cause of death was determined as "gunshot to wound to the head".The hearing was adjourned to allow the IOPC to carry out its investigation, which could last up to nine months.
After the hearing, Chris's cousin Jefferson Bosela, said in a statement: "Today's hearing was another step in achieving justice for Chris. "We need answers. Not just this family, but the whole of London – the whole of the country - needs to know how something like this could occur? "How can a young man, sitting in a car, unarmed, be shot in the head by police in London in 2022? "This should never have happened. It must never happen again. We must never accept this as normal. Someone must be held accountable."
