The community of Leeds is coming to terms with a riot that has caused widespread disruption in the Harehills area of the city. Locals were warned to stay indoors after tensions inflamed on Thursday evening at around 5pm. A police car was overturned and a bus was burnt to the ground.
It is believed violence flared after four children were removed from their home and placed in foster care. The community came to support the family as the parents were seen crying in the street. Social media footage also shows two children being forcibly removed from their home and put into police vans. Locals clashed with police and an empty police patrol car was overturned and attacked with prams and bricks. A double decker bus was set alight with one local claiming the bus driver was told to "save your life" and get out.
The Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, condemned the “shocking scenes and attacks” in Harehills. She wrote on X:
"I am appalled at the shocking scenes and attacks on police vehicles and public transport in Leeds...Disorder of this nature has no place in our society."
On social media, footage appears to show two men trying to set the bus alight. One man was seen using a lighter from the side door and the other opening the rear where the engine was located. The service were only able to attend the scene under police escort, hours after the disorder came to a close.
