The attacker allegedly killed himself after throwing homemade petrol bombs at a migrant processing centre in Dover, Kent.
Peter Nicholls, a photographer from REUTERS was on the scene at the time of the attack and caught the moment where a man threw several petrol bombs from his car window, towards the Border Force migrant centre in Dover. The objects appeared to be small milk cartons filled with dark fluid, with fireworks attached to them. These would later be confirmed to be improvised petrol bombs.
The man in the car was seen holding a lighter as he launched the object out of his car window. It's been alleged that after the incident, the attacker then proceeded to kill himself by tying a makeshift noose to a petrol station pillar.
He then attached it around his neck and drove away at full speed. At 11:22 am, Kent Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene to put out the flames.Recounting the event, a witness, who was 200 metres away from the migrant centre, claimed he heard "three bangs", saw smoke, and then "heard the alarms going and people yelling and shouting,".Police arrived on the scene within minutes and cordoned off the area. In a statement, a Kent Police said: "Officers established that two to three incendiary devices had been thrown into a Home Office immigration premises."One minor injury has been reported.
"The suspect has been identified and located. Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing."
Conservative MP for Dover, Natalie Elphicke, has stated that she is "absolutely shocked and appalled" by the incident.
Elphicke expressed that "tensions have been rising" surrounding the number of migrants arriving in the tow, and has since addressed her concerns following the attack to the immigration minister."
She went on to add: "I have expressed my concerns over the security of the centre in Dover. I don't think this is the appropriate place for a migrant-receiving centre. Dover is an extremely busy and open port."
A spokeswoman from the Home Office has commented that: "We are aware of an incident at Western Jet Foil, Dover and police are in attendance.
"It would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage."
