Met Police Ends Case To Fire Officer Over Possession Of Child Abuse Video

A three-year bid to fire Supt Robyn Williams after she was sent a video of a five year old being abused as ended

Supt Robyn Williams

The Met police has ended their three-year legal attempt to fire Supt Robyn Williams for possessing a video of child abuse. The superintendent, 57, was sentenced to community service in 2019 after she was sent a video of a five-year-old girl being attacked. She was then fired by the Met four months later. However, a tribunal concluded that she should have her job back. Although the Met appealed against this, they were overruled. Supt Williams claimed that she didn't ask or view the video that her sister sent to her on WhatsApp. Her sister, who is a social worker, had wanted her to investigate it. Supt Williams may now receive a six-figure sum in damages.A spokesperson for the Met, stated: "The Metropolitan Police Service is aware that the Court of Appeal has refused permission to hear two cases in which officers were reinstated after receiving criminal convictions. The Met accepts the decision of the Court.

The Met pursued this action as we believe there is an overwhelming public expectation that those who commit serious offences should no longer serve as police officers."

They added: "This is fundamental to our integrity. At a time when the Met is working hard to raise standards, retaining officers convicted of certain criminal offences can undermine the trust and confidence we need to restore within our communities."
