Today, an investigation was launched into a mother's claims that her autistic daughter, aged 14, was strip-searched by MET Officers in December 2020.
The met police force confirmed the woman had made a complaint after the teenager was left traumatised and tried to kill herself. The mixed-race girl, who was referred to by the BBC as "Olivia", was said to have been out with friends when they argued with two boys who phoned police with claims that the group had attempted to rob them at knifepoint. The report comes after the backlash over revelations that 'Child Q' was strip-searched by female Metropolitan Police officers in 2020 even when they knew that she was menstruating. She was wrongly suspected of carrying cannabis at her London school.
Olivia's mother, who the BBC refer to as "Lisa", told Radio 4's 'File On 4' show that officers searched Olivia and her friends at the scene and the group were thus arrested in December 2020.Olivia was held in custodial cells for more than 20 hours after being found to have a 'sharpened stick and a small blade', which her mother said was for the purpose of self-harming, and not for an intent to danger others.
The discovery had allegedly prompted the six police officers to forcefully strip Olivia and carry out an intimate strip search in the presence of male police officers. Her mother has since said: "Olivia was actually on her period at the time too. And they cut off her underwear in front of these grown male officers,"She was absolutely distraught."A MET Police spokesperson has since announced: "We have received a complaint from the girl's mother, which is currently under investigation."We have also received notification of a potential civil claim and therefore are unable to comment further at this stage."
