Mum, Mary McCann has been jailed for four years after a drink drive crash killed her two children.
Mary McCann, 35, was driving on the M1 at 11:10pm when she crashed into the large lorry. The white Scania HGV was driving in the lane beside her when she aimed to drift across and behind it but unfortunately smashed into it instead.McCann was driving with three of her children in the car but four year old Lilly and ten year old Smaller sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The case prosecutor, Stephen Shay told the court that Mary was driving at 72mph in a 60 zone. Mr Shay also told the court that a witness had heard McCann shout "God, why didn't I put their seatbelts on?" in the immediate aftermath of the crash.Neither of the two children were wearing a seatbelt and the impact caused Lilly to 'catapult' out the car as a result. She was found on the roadside while Smaller was found slumped in the footwell. Mary McCann wept in court as she was jailed for four years for two counts of causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink.
The driver of the lorry involved was not seriously injured.According to a family member Mary McCann had been driving back from a party in London despite being over the legal drink-drive limit.Judge Francis Sheridan made clear that had Lilly and Smaller been wearing a seatbelt, the fatalities may have been avoided. He also said "there is no punishment commensurate with the loss of one's two children and I accept that...the message must go out: don't drive under the influence of alcohol."Mary McCann was jailed for 49 months and banned from driving for seven years and two weeks after she pled guilty in court.
