Noel Clarke: Actor Dropped By BAFTA And Several Broadcasters After Sexual Harassment Allegations

After news broke of his alleged sexual harassment, Noel Clarke is increasingly finding himself isolated. His BAFTA award and membership were cancelled and numerous projects with broadcasters such as ITV have been suspended.

In an investigation conducted by the Guardian, a total of 20 women; all of whom knew Clarke professionally accused him of sexual harassment, professional misconduct, taking and sharing sexually explicit pictures and videos without consent, bullying, groping - among other gross cases of misconduct.

Although he categorically denies, through his lawyers all the allegations, the guardian has exposed numerous testimonies and stories of inappropriate behaviour from women and girls who have worked with him at all levels throughout the years - and they all tell the same story; one of a powerful, manipulative, shameless and sexually hungry bully.

Influential filmmaker

Many could easily describe Clarke as a genius in the world of film; both as an actor and producer. His trio of films Kidulthood (2006), Adulthood (2008) and Brotherhood (2016); which grossed a whooping of £8.6m combined were all celebrated for their portrayals of inner-city life. On top of that; the 45 year old father of three also writes, produces and stars alongside Ashley Walters in Bulletproof, one of Sky's biggest shows. His company, Unstoppable Film & Television, has also produced various UK films and he sits on Bafta's influential film committee. Indeed, he is a man of great power in the industry and as the recent claims have revealed; he also uses that power, allegedly in other ways.

Allegation after allegation

Gina Powell, one of his many accusers worked with Clarke between 2014 and 2017 on the production of Brotherhood. She revealed through the Guardian that Clarke would constantly harass her and on one occasion told her that; on hiring her, he had planned "to fuck her and fire her" before deciding to keep her. She also revealed that Clarke bragged about secretly filming naked actors during auditions and storing the clips on his hard drive and had once shown her one of the secretly recorded tapes.

Another allegation came from Norwegian film producer Synne Seltveit who met Clarke in July 2015. After watching a UFC mixed martial arts fight in Glasgow which Mr. Clarke had invited them to, Seltveit says, Clarke smacked her buttocks - which irritated her. Later on, when Seltveit sent an email expressing an interest in working with him, he replied acknowledging that he would like to work with her too and asked her to check her Snapchat where he had sent a photo of a bare penis.

Several women also accuse Clarke of unwanted sexual conduct from setting up sex scenes of himself with girls that he wanted, taking inappropriate pictures, trying to kiss actors and soliciting for sex.

The actor and screenwriter Jing Lusi, who has starred in Crazy Rich Asians and Gangs of London, worked with Clarke on the film SAS: Red Notice. She alleged that he asked her for sex and when she rejected it, his demeanour changed and he asked her not to let anyone know because it would "get back to him" anyway. The next morning, he sent her an emoji of a person with their finger to their lips, insinuating that he wanted her to stay silent.

Where's the proof, says Clarke

After discovering that allegations of sexual misconduct against Clarke had surfaced, Clarke and his business partner, Jason Maza, contacted people who might know what was going on - and requested them not to speak to the guardian.

Clarke also said he had not done the things he was being accused of, adding: "If there's someone that was like a consensual that's changed their mind five years later, well, firstly, that's fucking ridiculous. Secondly, they still have to prove it. And I'm not trying to be that guy that's like: hahaha I'm guilty, prove it. I'm not trying to be that guy. But they still have to prove it."

The outlook for Mr. Clarke is still unclear. However, with the mounting pressure and number of allegations, things could quickly take a turn for the worse. Various organisations have already distanced themselves from him and the worst is yet to come. However, for now, he maintains his innocence and his lawyers cite no wrongdoing.
