NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL 'GENERATES £396 MILLION FOR THE ECONOMY'

The Notting Hill Carnival will “boost the economy by £396 million” according to a study commissioned by the Voice Newspaper. The annual carnival will attract up to two million people to the capital's streets.

JN Bank economist James Williams revealed that the total direct or net economic impact of the Notting Hill Carnival is over £396 million a year. This based on revelers spending on accommodation, food, shopping, entertainment, and travel. Williams analysis is the first study to examine the economical impact of carnival since 2003. It found that Europe’s largest street festival supports the equivalent of 3,000 full-time jobs and attracts approximately 160,000 international tourists every year. “Carnival is absolutely generating significantly higher sums of money than when we first studied it,” Williams told The Voice.

The study comes after social media users criticised the Metropolitan Police for sharing a message on X about the number of arrests and violence at this year’s carnival. The force said the annual event in West London celebrating Caribbean culture was "marred by unacceptable violence."

They shared that a total of 103 arrests were made on Sunday for violence, robbery, sexual offences, drug offences and possession of offensive weapon. They also confirmed that 18 officers were assaulted. Many X users wondered why similar posts were not made after other major events in London.
