POLICE INVESTIGATE THE VIRTUAL RAPE OF TEENAGER ON VIRTUAL REALITY GAME

In an immersive video game, a young girl's digital character allegedly faces sexual assault by a group of adult men, leading to the first investigation of its kind.

This incident raises inquiries about the applicability of current laws in the online realm. British Police is looking into the initial instance of sexual assault within the metaverse following an incident where a minor under 16 was 'assaulted' in a virtual reality video game.

The young girl is reported to have experienced profound distress as her digital character, or avatar, was subjected to a gang rape by unknown individuals online.

Victim, who was wearing a headset during the incident, did not sustain any physical injuries as the assault was purely virtual. Under the leadership of Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook, major technology companies have invested substantial sums to attract users, both young and old, into the virtual realm of the 'metaverse,' offering the opportunity to lead a digitised, fantasy life.

The incident occurred when the victim was present in an online 'room' with a considerable number of other users, where she experienced a virtual assault done by several adult men.

Police leaders are advocating for legislation to address a surge in sexual offenses within this realm, emphasising the need for evolving tactics to prevent individuals from exploiting children using new technology.

However, the ground breaking case has raised questions about the feasibility of law enforcement pursuing virtual offenses, especially considering the current challenges faced by police and prosecutors in managing a significant backlog of real rape cases.

The National Police Chiefs' Council's Child Protection and Abuse Investigation Lead, Ian Critchley, cautioned that 'the metaverse creates a gateway for predators to commit horrific crimes against children.'

The details of this extraordinary virtual reality case have been kept confidential to safeguard the involved child, amid concerns that, for various reasons, prosecution may not be feasible.
