Greater Manchester Police have requested a bail extension for Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood in order to "continue to investigate a report" into his case.In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "We are continuing to investigate a report made to us on Sunday 30 January of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence. A 20-year-old man arrested that day on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman, and threats to kill, remains on bail."

The statement continued: "An application has been made to the courts to have his bail extended beyond Saturday 30 April, but the hearing isn't expected to be until mid-June. The suspect will remain on conditional bail until the date of the court hearing. Any update on the outcome of that hearing – or news before then – will be issued proactively by GMP press office. "The 20-year-old football player was arrested on Sunday 30 January on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman, and threats to kill and remains on bail.

The report made to the police included "online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence".Earlier this month Greenwood was pictured for the first time since he was arrested, driving his car in Altrincham, Greater Manchester. He was photographed wearing a Cartier balaclava and driving with a male passenger beside him. Several photographs were taken of Greenwood driving the vehicle.After the allegations against Greenwood were made public, the footballer was suspended from playing or training with the Old Trafford club until further notice. Greenwood lost deals and sponsorships not long after the allegations emerged. Nike suspended its sponsorship deal with Greenwood and Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its Fifa 22 game.
