More than 100 people have died in a stampede after huge crowds gathered for Halloween in a popular nightlife area of South Korea's capital.
South Korea's President, Yoon Suk-yeol, has called an emergency meeting after over 100 people died from a stampede in South Korea's capital. There were reportedly 100,000 people gathered in Seoul's Itaewon district, who were celebrating the first outdoor no-mask Halloween since the pandemic.Photos and videos taken on the scene showed thousands of people grouped up in tight alleyways, in which many people posted that the area was so crowded that it felt unsafe.
Footage taken after the incident shows dozens of victims lying on the pavement receiving CPR, while others can be seen crying for help as they are trapped by others lying on top of them.More than 800 emergency services personnel were deployed to the scene to treat the injured. Most of the bodies have been sent to the hospital, while others have been taken to a nearby gym so that they can be identified.
It is still not known what caused the stampede.A BBC South Korea correspondent, Hosu Lee, commented that, "a lot of young people have gathered here tonight. A lot of people came to the party and club, wearing costumes and a lot of people I've seen distraught and sad and there are chaotic scenes."
