Actress Thandiwe Newton has been popularly known by an anglicised version of her name; "Thandie" for decades.

However, she has now said she is reverting to the original Zimbabwean spelling of her first name, Thandiwe.The full name of the Emmy- and BAFTA-winning British actress, born in London to a white British father and a Zimbabwean mother, is Melanie Thandiwe Newton.

She said her name was misspelt in the credits to her first film, 1991's Flirting, also starring Nicole Kidman and Noah Taylor. As a result, Thandie Newton stuck with the actress for the past three decades.All her future acting projects will from now be credited as Thandiwe Newton, the star said."That's my name," she said in an interview with British Vogue. "It's always been my name. I'm taking back what's mine."

Newton had originally told the magazine her name was a Shona word, but later posted on Twitter to clarify, saying: "Sincerest apologies from me, for error in @BritishVogue. My name 'Thandiwe' is Zulu, my Mother's tribe is Shona.

"That's what happens when you're separated from your identity for so long, that you forget who you are #ZimbabweanLivesMatter", she added on a lighter note.Thandiwe is best known for starring in sci-fi TV series; Westworld and for films including Crash and Mission Impossible II, as well her guest role in season four of the hit police corruption drama Line Of Duty.The 48 year old actress also talked of harassment during her years in the industry. Newton also told Vogue that she welcomed how much the representation of ethnic minority groups has improved in the entertainment landscape.
