Things Happening In The World Right Now That We Need To Be Aware Of

Genocide, famine and civil war are a few of the many things that are occurring in certain parts of the world. And while some forms of media have been reporting of these events that have been going on for years - mainstream media and society chooses to turn a blind eye.

In the wake of the BLM movement, I thought it was only fitting to try and educate myself on these things occurring and wanted to draw attention to this on a place where the majority of the world would go everyday - social media. Trying to fit in millions of injustices that occur on a daily basis is an extremely hard and unattainable task, especially for my mere one account, so I thought giving a glimpse into some events that we all need to speak about more is not enough, but is a start.

1. YEMEN
Yemen, at this current moment in time, is going through the world's biggest humanitarian crisis; and with that in mind, you would think more people would know how severe the situation there really is. As stated by UNICEF, more than 24million people – some 80 per cent of the population – are in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 12million children. The epidemic of cholera, a water-bourne disease, is a huge problem in Yemen creating stress and pressure on the healthcare system; and to make matters worse, COVID-19 has only escalated the situation. Yemen is therefore undergoing an epidemic, pandemic, famine and war all at the same time. This situation needs to be spoken more about by society and mainstream media, especially before it is too late.

2. UYGHUR CONCENTRATION CAMPS

Millions of Uighur Muslims and other ethnic minorities are being held in concentration camps in China. As stated by the Independent, A Muslim woman who escaped from a state re-education camp in Chinasaid inmates were gang raped, subjected to torture and medical experiments and forced to eat pork. Thousands are said to be fleeing back to Turkey which is where the Uyghurs are originally from. Thisreported modern day genocide shows a stagnation in societys humanity, our silence is complicity.

3. SLAVE TRADE IN LIBYA

Slavery and human trafficking is still very prevalent all around the modern world, but I thought I would draw into the articles and reports I have found regarding a slave trade in Libya. Libya is a country in North Africa, and it is reported that Black Africans are being sold into slavery for as little as $400. The slave auctioneers are exploiting the fact that Libya is a coastal country and has Also been undergoing a civil war since 2014 - with this, they are taking advantage of vulnerable migrants who are attempting to make the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe. The unimaginable things that are occurring need to be addressed.

4. ROHINGYA CRISIS

The Rohingya, a Muslim Group who are one of Myanmar's ethnic minority, were sent fleeing in the thousands to the borders of Bangladesh in the summer of 2017 due to a deadly attack by the Myanmar army. Due to the burning down of their villages, the raping of their women and murder of their people, the little response from both Myanmar and society is inhumane. As stated by the BBC, "A report published by UN investigators in August 2018 accused Myanmar's military of carrying out mass killings and rapes with "genocidal intent". We cannot forget this ethnic cleansing that took place in 2017 until the Rohingya have received the justice they deserve.

5. ANTI-BLM PROTESTERS AND THE EDL

The fact that certain people can protest against black people wanting to be treated equally after 400 years of discrimination and oppression is unimaginable beyond belief. In the UK, a statue of the slave trader named Edward Colston, who trafficked over 80000 black men and women into slavery, was taken down in the midst of the BLM protests.

However, this caused an uproar for the people who believed that this was "defacing history" and "vandalism". The question that needs to be asked is why did someone who had committed that much evil, and played such a big part in the oppression of black people, have a statue celebrating their "accomplishments". These anti-BLM protests are proof that certain people in society don't want change and are still comfortable with black people being treated as second class citizens.

When certain media speaks about the BLM protests, they love to use the word "thugs" and make it known that it is "Black" people protesting even though there are many other races there too. However, when it comes to the actual violent anti-protests, the derogatory words used to describe the people attending are much less in use and the colour of their skin is not addressed. As a black person, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. Wake up.
