Two women tragically died after the hospital they were staying in provided them with chicken mayo sandwiches which were contaminated with listeria.

In 2019 Beverley Sowah, a nurse of Jamaican descent, and Enid Heap, a mother of five, were given the listeria contaminated sandwiches while they were patients at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

As both women had underlying illnesses, the exposure to listeria caused them to die within days.

Their deaths were not an isolated incident, as five other fatalities had occurred during a national outbreak of listeria, which affected other hospitals in Liverpool, Leicester, and Derby.

Listeriosis, which can be caused by exposure to listeria, can be deadly to people with compromised immune systems.

A five-day inquest found the harmful bacteria was found at the meat processing centre North Country Quality Foods in Salford.

Their contaminated chicken was then supplied to a sandwich-making company called the Good Food Chain, which is based in Staffordshire.

The families of the victims welcomed the news of the inquest, with Sowah's family stating that they were able to gain "closure".
