Abortion is now illegal and protests have erupted all across the US as at least eight states have immediately stopped performing them.
States Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, South Dakota, Wisconsin and West Virginia stopped performing abortions instantly. At this time, 13 states have outlawed abortion. It is expected that this number will almost double as predictions state that abortion will likely be banned in around half the US states. Protestors are swarming political buildings in the hope of changing the verdict. The Arizona State Senate had to be evacuated due to the protestors surrounding the building, where a window was smashed in the commotion.
Police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowds gathering.Amy Fitch-Heacock, founder of a reproductive rights group was quoted saying:"I fight because I know what happens to women who are denied abortion care... I fight because I know what happens to single mothers who raise children alone abandoned by the men who promised to show up."Thousands of people demonstrated outside the Supreme Court in Washington DC. The state of Mississippi's only abortion clinic continued to attend to patients following the Supreme Court verdict.
Yesterday. the US Supreme Court voted to overturn the Roe v Wade landmark which was a 1973 case which decided that pregnant women are entitled to an abortion during the first three months of pregnancy. Still, there was room for legal restrictions and bans in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.Now that Roe v Wade is overturned, each individual state has been given the freedom to ban abortions even before 12 weeks if they so choose. Protests to fight this are happening across several states including those that have reassured residents that they would not be banning abortions such as New York and California.
US President Joe Biden said on the matter: "It's a sad day for the court and for the country." Biden encouraged voters to consider this change in the November elections and said:"This decision must not be the final word."
