A Nigerian man has twerked his way into the record books. Babajide Israel Adebanjo shook his backside for 3 hours and 30 minutes to break the Guinness World Record. Babajide Israel Adebanjo says he took on the challenge to raise awareness about depression and the importance of mental health.
"We are beyond thrilled to announce that our record-breaking achievement has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records," Adebanjo wrote on his TikTok account, where he posted a video showing the acceptance email from the organisation. The post thanked everyone who supported Adebanjo as he took on the twerking challenge. "We're incredibly proud to have set a new standard in twerking, and we couldn't have done it without your energy, enthusiasm, and support," he wrote.
Adebanjo also celebrated by twerking in the street in his hometown of Lagos. The previous record holder for the longest twerking is Elena Sofie Sterlini, an Austrian who twerked for two hours and one minute on 3 January 2023.
This is the third high profile record break by a Nigerian in recent months. In June 2023, Hilda Baci achieved a new Guinness World Record for the longest cook-a-thon. Nigerian chess champion and child education advocate Tunde Onakoya broke the record for the longest chess marathon after playing for an extraordinary 60 hours in New York City’s Times Square.
