A 16-year-old boy, Ralph Yarl, has been shot in the head after going to the wrong house to pick up his younger twin brothers.
The incident occurred on Thursday at 10 pm in Kansas City, Missouri. According to reports, the teen was shot at least twice, once through the house's front door and another as he lay injured on the ground. The teenager managed to flee the scene and sought help. However, he had to knock at three different homes before he received any assistance
.Yarl has sustained life-threatening injuries but is said to be in stable condition. The shooter, suspected to have shot Ralph, was taken into custody on Thursday. He has since been released pending further investigation.Stacey Graves, the chief of the Kansas City police department, supported the homeowner's release during a press conference on Sunday by invoking Missouri law, which states that an individual can only be detained for 24 hours before being officially charged or released.
Graves' statement read: ‚"We recognise the frustration this can cause, I want everyone to know that I am listening, and I understand the concern we are receiving from the community.‚" Despite this, the shooting has, of course, caused mass upset within the community and across the United States with celebrities and activists alike sharing their disdain toward the situation and demanding justice for the young teen. Ben Crump, the civil rights lawyer who represents Yarl's family, has demanded that the homeowner be detained and charged for ‚Äúthis horrendous and unjustifiable shooting.
You cant just shoot people without having justification when somebody comes knocking on your door, and knocking on your door is not justification. This guy should be charged.
Yarl, a high school junior who loved music, travelled to the wrong location after picking up his brothers, ending up at a home on 115th Street instead of 115th Terrace, where he was fatally shot after knocking on the door. The protest was attended by police officers, according to the mayor of Kansas City, Quinton Lucas, who stated they were there to hear from the public.
This is not something that has been dismissed, marginalised or diminished in any way. This is something that is getting the full attention of the Kansas City police department." Lucas said.
Police have yet to release the name or race of the alleged attacker.
