Police have arrested two teenage boys after a large seat was thrown from the third floor of the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, London, narrowly missing shoppers below. Footage circulating on social media shows a man in a grey hoodie inside the shopping centre, lifting a blue pouffe before recklessly launching it over the glass barrier.
The seat plummets multiple floors before crashing onto the ground, mere inches away from unsuspecting members of the public. The suspect then flees the scene alongside his friends. The video, posted on TikTok, captures the moment of impact, with a caption reading: "No way bro almost killed someone." The disturbing clip quickly went viral, sparking outrage among viewers. Following an investigation, authorities confirmed that a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. Both remain in police custody. A spokesperson for Newham MPS described the incident as serious and urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
In the footage, as the teenager initially struggles to lift the seat, a bystander behind the camera can be heard exclaiming, "There's no way this guy’s doing it. Oh my god." Moments later, after mustering enough strength, he hurls the chair over the edge. A loud thud echoes through the shopping centre as the seat lands dangerously close to an oblivious shopper, prompting startled reactions from passersby.
Immediately after, the group—including the perpetrator, the cameraman, and another accomplice—sprint away, shouting as they ascend an escalator. Upon reaching the top, the boy who threw the chair is heard saying, "I can't believe I did that."
The video has sparked heated discussions online, with many condemning the reckless act. One user commented, "If a mother with a pram had been underneath, no one would have survived. This is attempted murder, and they should be held accountable." A second person added, "I can’t stop thinking about what could have happened if this hit an elderly person or a child. It could have been fatal." Authorities continue to investigate the incident, urging anyone with further details to come forward.
