The US court sentenced Instagram personality Hushpuppi for internet fraud and money laundering.

Internet personality, Ramon 'HUSHPUPPI' Abbas has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by a United States District Court in California. Hushpuppi has been charged with cyber fraud and money laundering. The 37 year old has already completed two years of his prison sentence at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Chicago IL and will serve a further 9 years behind bars.

The internet celebrity and 12 others were detained in Dubai in June 2020 after allegations of hacking, identity theft, scamming and banking fraud were raised. The fraud scheme carried out by Hushpuppi and 12 others robbed victims of money in the US, Qatar, the UK and various other locations. They were then extradited to the US where Hushpuppi was charged with cyber fraud and money laundering.

In July 2021 Hushpuppi pleaded guilty to the charges and entered into a plea bargain with US Judge Otis Wright in hopes of a reduced sentence.Abbas admitted to conspiring with others both within and outside of the US to launder money from a fraudulent scheme.

The plea was initially rejected by Judge Otis Wright. On 19th September, Judge Otis Wright delayed Hushpuppi's sentencing to November 3. Hushpuppi is known for flaunting a lavish lifestyle on social media, however, it is widely suspected that this could have contributed to his arrest. It is alleged that Hushpuppi has been cooperative with police amid the investigation, and has scored high in cleaning activities during his stay in prison.Abbas has apologised to his family for "bringing them shame", and has also commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for doing a thorough job in bringing him to justice.
