The Times has reported that the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has informed her political allies that she is on the "same side" as a group of Conservative police and crime commissioners who have called for Cannabis to be reclassified.

David Sidwick, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Dorset, stated that cannabis was "driving harm" in communities throughout the UK."We're seeing it because it's a gateway drug. If you look at the young people in treatment, the number one drug they are in treatment for is cannabis.

"He would go on to add that: "There are so many crimes linked to drugs that, actually, by addressing this, by giving us this clarity, it makes it clearer for our police to be able to do what they need to do."Suella Braverman appears to be 'receptive' to this idea according to an Home Office source, however, commenters are skeptical that she will follow through with plans to implement this policy. When if the Home Secretary would introduce plans proposed by Conservative Police Commissioners, the source stated:

"That is a very big stretch of the imagination."Here position on this is that effectively cannabis has been legalised by not being policed properly. We ned to focus attention on changing that."If cannabis is reclassified from a Class B to Class A drug it would increase the maximum penalty for possession from five to seven years in prison, and from 15 years to a life sentence for supply and production.A Home Office spokesperson has commented that: "Cannabis is a controlled drug on the basis of clear medical and scientific evidence of its harms. It is currently a Class B drug but its classification is subject to review."
