USAIN BOLT’S FATHER, WELLESLEY, PASSES AWAY AT 68

Wellesley Bolt, father of Olympic sprinting legend Usain Bolt, has passed away at the age of 68. His death was confirmed by local media on Monday after a prolonged battle with illness. Wellesley played a pivotal role in his son’s extraordinary achievements, which include eight Olympic gold medals. He remained a steadfast presence in Usain’s life, often seen celebrating with him after his victories on the track.

Before shifting to a grocery business with his wife, Jennifer, Wellesley spent 16 years working in the coffee industry. Together, they provided for their family in Sherwood Content, a small Jamaican community that lacked modern infrastructure such as paved roads and running water. Wellesley is survived by his children, Usain, Sadiki, and Christine Bolt-Hylton. Despite Usain’s rise to international fame and the subsequent improvements to their village, Wellesley chose to stay rooted in the community where he raised his family.

Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from across the nation. Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, expressed his condolences in a heartfelt message, saying, "I join with every Jamaican in extending my deepest and most sincere condolences to @usainbolt, his beloved mother, Mrs. Jennifer Bolt, and the entire Bolt family, following the passing of their patriarch, Mr. Wellesley Bolt."

She added: "Mr. Bolt was the father of a global icon and a quiet but powerful force behind one of Jamaica’s greatest sons. His guidance and unwavering support helped shape a legacy that continues to inspire people worldwide."

Prime Minister, Andrew Holness concluded by saying "Usain, we have all witnessed the deep love and respect you have for your family. You celebrated them with pride, and in doing so, reminded us all of the importance of family. As you navigate this immense loss, know that the prayers and support of an entire nation are with you. We mourn with you, stand beside you, and honour your father’s memory."

Jamaican Member of Parliament, Olivia Grange, also extended her sympathies, stating, "I offer my sincerest condolences to Jennifer, Usain, and the rest of the Bolt family. It will be a difficult time, but I encourage them to find comfort in the cherished memories of a wonderful father."

As of now, Usain Bolt has not commented publicly on his father’s passing.
