WHITNEY ADEBAYO OPENS UP ABOUT RACIST ABUSE FOLLOWING THE RELEASE OF 'INSIDE'

Whitney Adebayo, former Love Island star and contestant on the second series of the Sidemen’s Inside, recently took to Instagram to reveal the racist abuse she has endured since the show aired on Netflix this month (March 2025).

Whitney faced intense backlash, particularly for her decision to spend £30,000 from the prize fund on a birthday celebration after accepting a temptation to host a party for herself and her fellow contestants. Some co-stars, including former footballer, Patrice Evra, criticised her choice, calling it “selfish” due to the significant reduction in the group’s potential winnings.

In a series of Instagram stories, Whitney shared several direct messages (DMs) exposing the racist and hateful comments she has received, making sure to tag each of the users. One particularly disturbing message read, “You fcking ngger. I hope you don’t fcking wake up tomorrow, fcking fat blackie.” Another message stated, “They should’ve never added your #MonkeyMonologues to the show. Your #demographic need to go.”

Following the exposure of these messages, Whitney posted a statement addressing the abuse and expressing her disappointment over the hateful responses she has faced. She explained that while criticism is expected in the public eye, the level of racism she has encountered is far beyond mere feedback.

“I’d like to take the time and address something important after the airing of Inside on Netflix,” she wrote. “I was a contestant on the show, where the goal was to win a million pounds while navigating the challenge of saving and spending money. I was a "spender" by nature, which added some fun and drama to the show, but it’s important to remember that everything you saw was a part of the game, designed for entertainment.”

She continued, “I've received a mix of reactions- some positive, some negative. But what I've encountered more than anything is the reality of racism. I understand that being in the spotlight brings criticism, but what I’ve experienced the past few days goes beyond criticism. This is evil, hatred, and pure racism and it should not be tolerated. The hateful messages, the death threats, and the unjust treatment I’ve received are not only hurtful, but they also serve as a reminder that racism is still very much embedded in British culture.”

Whitney also highlighted the broader issue of how society treats women who do not conform to specific stereotypes. “This isn’t just about a TV show, it’s about the way society can sometimes respond to women like me, women who may stand out or don’t fit a certain mold of being cute and mute,” she explained.

Despite the abuse, Whitney expressed gratitude to those who have supported her throughout her journey. “For those of you who have supported me, thank you. Your love and encouragement keep me grounded. To those who have tried to tear me down, I want to remind you: your hate doesn’t define me. It only fuels my determination to grow and to be unapologetically myself.”

Concluding her statement, she reflected on her experience on the show with pride. “I had the best time; however, my journey has come to an end. Love me or hate me, either way, I know you were entertained. You’re welcome x.”
