Daisy Richards, an 84-year-old nurse, has been recognised for her outstanding dedication and contribution to the field of nursing, earning a prestigious social care award. Working at the Fairways Newydd Nursing and Dementia Care Home in Llanfairpwll, Anglesey, Richards has devoted her life to patient care since qualifying as a nurse in 1958. Despite her age, she continues to work tirelessly and has no intention of retiring.
At the Wales Care Awards ceremony held in Cardiff, Ms Richards was presented with the Gold Dignity in Care Award and a Bronze Outstanding Service Award. The accolades celebrate her unwavering commitment and service to the healthcare sector over decades.
“I’m still in a state of shock at getting the gold award to be honest; I still don’t think it has registered,” she expressed. Although humbled by the recognition, Ms Richards admitted she found it difficult to accept the award as a personal achievement.
“I just go to work, do my work, and do my best,” she added. “The important thing is that I am still able to work, do my job to my maximum capacity.”
Colleagues and community members have praised Ms Richards for her extraordinary dedication and resilience. Known for her compassionate nature and professionalism, she has been a beacon of inspiration in the field, exemplifying the values of care and empathy.
When asked why she continues to work at 84, Richards simply replied, “It’s a part of who I am. I love what I do, and I see no reason to stop as long as I’m able.” Her story has touched many, showcasing that age is no barrier to passion and commitment.
Winning this award is “a bit of an achievement,” as Richards put it, but her true fulfilment comes from making a difference in the lives of her patients and their families. With a career spanning over six decades, she remains a shining example of dedication, proving that her influence extends far beyond the wards.
