MAJOR FIRE IN NORTH WOOLWHICH: 70 FIRE FIGHTERS BATTLE BLAZE AT RYMILL STREET FLATS

**North Woolwich, 28 June 2024**

A major fire broke out late last night in a high-rise building on Rymill Street, North Woolwich, prompting a swift and robust response from the London Fire Brigade. Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were dispatched to tackle the blaze, which severely damaged a three-room flat on the 10th floor.

The fire was first reported at 22:32, with firefighters arriving from Plaistow, Barking, East Ham, Poplar, and surrounding stations. By 23:50, the blaze was under control, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the emergency teams.

Upon arrival, firefighters led four residents to safety, ensuring their immediate protection from the fire. Meanwhile, other occupants remained safely in their flats, which were unaffected by the fire. The London Ambulance Service transported five people to hospital for treatment, underscoring the severity of the incident.

Approximately 100 residents were evacuated and taken to a local rest centre, where they received support and temporary accommodation. The Brigade's 999 Control Officers were inundated with calls, handling nearly 30 emergency reports from concerned citizens and residents.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, as fire officials work to determine what sparked the blaze that resulted in significant property damage and disruption.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues and more information becomes available.
