After more than 20 years, the highly anticipated Unity Cup is set to make a grand return in May 2025. The Afro-Caribbean international football tournament, which last took place in 2004, will be hosted at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium. This year’s edition will feature four national teams rich in football heritage: Ghana, Jamaica, Nigeria, and Trinidad and Tobago. The tournament aims to spotlight elite footballing talent while celebrating the deep-rooted cultural and sporting ties between African and Caribbean nations.
Brentford club ambassador Marcus Gayle expressed his excitement about the tournament’s revival: “This tournament will not only bring together elite footballing talent from Africa and the Caribbean but also celebrate the deep cultural and sporting connections between these nations.”
AfroSport co-director Andy Howes emphasized the event’s wider significance: “The Unity Cup is a tournament that really does evoke the often-used phrase of an event that goes ‘beyond sport’. But with the array of elite stars and the profile of the teams involved, this event is not only important in terms of its cultural significance, but also reflects the growing commercial importance of African and Caribbean football—as well as the rising demographic of Black football fans within English football.”Tickets for the Unity Cup go on sale on Tuesday, 15 April at 5pm BST.
