A woman has spoken out about the regretful moment she unknowingly discarded a hard drive holding her ex-boyfriend James Howells' massive Bitcoin fortune. The drive, containing 8,000 Bitcoins mined in 2009, was tossed into a Newport landfill site in Wales nearly a decade ago, a mistake she says she made while helping him clear out rubbish.
James Howells has been locked in a lengthy legal battle with Newport Council to excavate the landfill where he believes the hard drive is buried. If recovered, the Bitcoin's current value of £569 million could make him an overnight millionaire, a dream that remains tantalizingly out of reach beneath an estimated 110,000 tonnes of waste.
His former partner, Halfina Eddy-Evans, revealed that she disposed of the drive while completing a school run at Howells’ request. Speaking to Mail Online, she explained, "He asked me to throw it out, so I did. I had no idea what was inside, and I thought I was just doing him a favour. It wasn’t my fault, but now all I hear about is that hard drive."
Halfina admitted she wants Howells to find the fortune—not for personal gain, but to finally move past the topic. "I’m sick and tired of hearing about it," she confessed. "I don’t want a penny of his money; I just wish this whole thing could be resolved for his sake."
James, meanwhile, has pledged to donate 10% of any recovered Bitcoin to benefit his local community in Newport. But the council has so far refused his excavation proposals, citing logistical and environmental concerns.
Halfina remains divided on the issue. "Part of me thinks the council should let him dig it up—it would be better for his mental health. But another part thinks maybe it’s time for him to let it go and move on."
As Howells continues his fight to recover the digital key to unimaginable wealth, Halfina’s hope is for peace and closure—whether or not the treasure hunt is successful.
