Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinborough, has passed away aged 99.A statement from the Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh."His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth were married for more than 70 years, and they went on to become the longest-serving consort in British history.After a term in hospital, Prince Phillip returned to Windsor Castle on March 16. He had visited hospital on previous occasions, but spent a month in hospital this time around - which is his longest stay.The details of his stay were not initially revealed.#
It was only known that he attended the hospital for an infection. However, it later came out that he had to undertake surgery.Prince Phillip will not have a state funeral. The College of Arms released a statement that said "Will lie at rest in Windsor Castle ahead of the funeral in St George's Chapel".
An official notice of his death was posted on the Buckingham Palace gates but was later removed to avoid attracting large crowds.On Friday, Boris Johnson praised the late Prince Philip for his support of the Queen:"We remember the duke for all of this and above all for his steadfast support for Her Majesty the Queen — not just as her consort, by her side every day of her reign, but as her husband, her strength and stay of more than 70 years," he said.
Labour Leader Keir Starmer also shared his condolences: "The United Kingdom has lost an extraordinary public servant in Prince Philip,"The First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon said: "On behalf of the people ofScotland, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Her Majesty The Queen and the rest of the royal family."We send our deepest condolences to the Royal Family.
