A woman who has accused rappers Jay-Z and Sean "Diddy" Combs of raping her when she was 13 after the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000, has admitted there are inconsistencies in her testimony. The unidentified woman spoke out in an NBC interview acknowledging that she "made some mistakes" but "stands by her allegations overall." Jay-Z - whose real name is Shawn Carter - and Combs both deny the allegations.
The Jane Doe alleges she was picked up by her father following the alleged assault, but he says he doesn't recall making the journey at all. The trip would have taken him over five hours. She also named a celebrity she claims she spoke to during the party, but that celebrity has said stated they were not at the party and was on tour at the time. Paparazzi pictures reviewed by NBC News show Combs and Carter at a different location than the one the woman described. It is not clear what time those images were taken, or if Combs and Carter attended any other after-parties.
A friend who the accuser says drove her from her home in Rochester, New York, to Radio City Music Hall in New York City, is since understood to have died. The federal lawsuit has been filed by Texas-based lawyer Tony Buzbee, who is representing 120 accusers in cases against Combs. Combs is currently incarcerated and facing a number of criminal charges and is currently awaiting trial.
Responding to latest developments, Carter and his lawyer Alex Spiro shared statements on X, calling it a "false complaint" and a "frivolous case". Carter wrote: "Today's investigative report proves this 'attorney' Buzbee filed a false complaint against me in the pursuit of money and fame. This incident didn't happen and yet he filed it in court and doubled down in the press. True justice is coming. We fight from victory, not for victory. This was over before it began. This 1-800 lawyer doesn't realise it yet, but, soon."
Jay-Z has previously called for the woman's identity to be revealed, or for the case to be dismissed. Mr Spiro said: "It is stunning that a lawyer would not only file such a serious complaint without proper vetting, but would make things worse by further peddling this false story in the press. We are asking the court to dismiss this frivolous case today, and will take up the matter of additional discipline for Mr Buzbee and all the lawyers that filed the complaint." Meanwhile, Mr Buzbee, said in an email to NBC that his client's claims were continuing to be vetted and data was still being collected.
Jay-Z is one of the world's most successful rappers in the world and is the recipient if 24 Grammy Awards. Last week he appeared on the red carpet alongside his wife Beyonce and their daughter Blue Ivy Carter, 12, a day after the allegations against him surfaced.
