In a momentous achievement, England's women's football team have fought  their way to the World Cup finals, being the first team to see such heights since the England Men’s 1966 World Cup win making the occasion by the Lionesses all the more remarkable.  

However, England's journey to the finals hasn't been without controversy. In a fiery quarter-final clash against Nigeria. The match saw star-player Lauren James stamp on the back of her opponent Michelle Alozie. James was subsequently rewarded a red-card leaving the Lionesses down to 10-women. Despite this, the Lionesses came out on top defeating the Super Falcons in a penalty shoot-out and progressing to the semi-final.

James was met with staunch criticism and outrage at the act with one pundit describing the act as ‘ridiculous and reckless’ James has since issued a public apology to Alozie.

The semi-finals saw England's women edge out the Australian national team beating the Matilda’s 3-1.

The finals sees the Lionesses come up against the Spanish side in a final on the 20th August.
