Chris Eubank Jr poured his heart out during an emotional press conference ahead of his highly anticipated clash with Conor Benn this Saturday, sharing deeply personal revelations about his family struggles that left the room in stunned silence.
The 35-year-old boxer addressed the grief of losing his younger brother, Sebastian Eubank, who tragically passed away in 2021 after suffering a heart attack while watching the sunset in the sea in Dubai. Sebastian was just 29 at the time.
Eubank Jr, speaking candidly, also opened up about his fractured relationship with his father, legendary boxer Chris Eubank Sr. He revealed the pair have not spoken for years, citing the loss of his brother as a major factor in the breakdown of their relationship.
“The weight is painful, I’m in pain right now. I’ll be in even more pain tonight and tomorrow morning,” Eubank Jr said. “But the question I ask myself is, ‘What is pain?’ I have a 31-year-old brother—he is buried in the desert in Dubai. That’s pain.”
He continued, “I have his son, Raheem, three years old, he asks: ‘Why can’t I see my daddy, why can’t he take me to school?’ That’s pain. My own father, a man I idolised for my entire life, doesn’t speak to me. We haven’t spoken for years. He thinks I’m a disgrace. These things are what pain is to me. If I can deal with all of these trials and tribulations, then the weight-cut and the rehydration clause… these are all things that are not an issue.”
Eubank Jr confirmed that the death of his brother was a turning point for his family, especially for his father. “That incident, coupled with the fact that we were already not seeing eye to eye, destroyed a large part of the relationship. And it still doesn't seem to have recovered,” he said.
Despite the emotional turmoil, Eubank Jr remains focused on the task ahead — reigniting the historic 25-year rivalry between the Eubank and Benn families. He will face off against Conor Benn, son of Nigel Benn, in a bout that carries significant legacy weight for both fighters.
The fight is expected to draw massive attention, but it’s Eubank Jr’s vulnerability and honesty ahead of the clash that have captured the public’s attention, offering a rare glimpse behind the bravado and into the personal pain of one of Britain’s most recognisable boxers.
