The incident took place on the latest Love Island: Aftersun instalment, when Georgia, who featured on season 4, appeared on the show to give her opinions on the current cast of Love Island Winter 2023. She also appeared alongside Joanna Chimonides, who starred on the same series of Love Island, with other special guests.
Presenter, Maya Jama, asked the ex-Islanders for their opinions on the current couples, and also wanted to know which couples stood out as potential winners, amid the chaos inside the villa.
Georgia quick responded, “I think my strongest would be Tanya and… Zack”.
Quickly noticing the mistake and in efforts to correct her, Maya replied: “Tanya and Shaq”.
Georgia then proceeded to admit: “I pronounce Zack because I always get it wrong. So I just say Zack but I know that’s obviously not his real name”.
Fans across social media, especially Twitter, were fast to pull her up on this mistake, and many fans called it a micro aggression towards Shaq. A micro aggression is a subtle, often unintentional, form of discrimination against someone belonging to a minority group.
"Georgia Steel did not just get on Aftersun and say that she calls Shaq, Zach because she knows she can’t say jt did we not learn from Lucie and Y #loveisland #aftersun #TALKSWITHASH "
"Georgia Steel mispronouncing Shaq's name was definitely on purpose. It's really not rocket science. Its a one syllable 4 letter name. She did the same with Kaz on her season. She is so annoying."
Many fans even compared the blunder to another incident, where ex-Love Islander Lucie Donlan faced backlash for mispronouncing her cast mate Yewande Biala's name and asking if she could shorten it to “Y”.
