Tommy Robinson supporters descended onto central London today in what they say was a protest calling for the resignation of Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, claims Rowley is presiding over a “two-tier policing” system.
The far-right activist also said the protest was about “celebrating...our culture and values.” However, Robinson proudly led a procession carrying a banner bearing the face of Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and the slogan: “This is London, not Londonistan.”
As Robinson spoke to crowds of people he also shared video messages from other far-right activists, some of whom shared Islamophobic conspiracy theories. Scotland Yard says some of the protesters have a history of being involved in violent disorder. Thousands of police officers had been drawn in to police the protests through the capital, with as many as 400 from forces outside London.
A counter-protest, organised by Stand Up To Racism, took place in Whitehall from midday in response to Robinson's march. It said in a statement its members would “stand together against attempts to divide us.”
