J.K. ROWLING DEFENDS NATALEE BARNETT’S WOMEN-ONLY GYM AMID BACKLASH

J.K. Rowling has publicly supported fitness entrepreneur Natalee Barnett, also known as Natalee B Fitness, after she faced criticism for making her new gym, The Girls Spot, exclusively for biological women. Rowling responded to the backlash by sharing an article about the controversy and tweeting: “Let me in your gym or we’ll kill you—says men who pose no risk to women whatsoever.”

Natalee Barnett recently announced that The Girls Spot will operate as a women-only gym, citing the need for a safe space for biological females, particularly those who have experienced harassment or discomfort in co-ed fitness environments. The decision has received both praise and criticism, sparking a wider debate on gender inclusivity in fitness spaces.

In response to the backlash, Barnett acknowledged the disappointment expressed by some members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies. “I wholeheartedly sympathize with trans women and allies who feel hurt by my recent announcement, and I appreciate that the decision to operate in this way will come as a disappointment to some,” she said. “The Girls Spot is absolutely committed to ensuring that it is a safe space for biological women, particularly those who have previously been victims of harassment, assault, or overall negative experiences at traditional gyms.”

Barnett emphasised that her primary goal is to create a sanctuary for women who have struggled to feel safe in co-ed fitness environments. The gym will offer self-defence classes, Muay Thai training, and specialised workshops covering topics like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and menstrual cycle-aligned training.

Rowling’s tweet in response to the controversy added fuel to the debate, with many supporters agreeing with her stance on protecting women-only spaces. The author has long been outspoken on issues of sex and gender, frequently defending female-only areas and women’s rights. The response to both Barnett’s decision and Rowling’s support has been divided. Supporters argue that women deserve the right to create spaces free from male presence, while critics believe inclusivity and safety for all should not be mutually exclusive.

One supporter of Barnett commented, “Don’t let the pressure get to you. You’ve done the right thing!” Meanwhile, a critic countered, “Trans women being included in a space and that space being safe for cis women are not mutually exclusive.” Despite the controversy, Barnett remains committed to her vision while expressing a willingness to listen and evolve. “The Girls Spot is on a long journey, and I will continue to listen, learn, and support the creation of inclusive fitness spaces for all,” she said.
