Since their former bandmate faced allegations of blackfishing, Little Mix has not publicly commented on the matter. However, the group has now broken their silence.
Leigh-Anne Pinnock spoke to the Daily Telegraph Stella Magazine and said: She says: "Capitalising on aspects of blackness without having to endure the daily realities of the black experience is problematic and harmful to people of colour. We think it's absolutely not OK to use harmful stereotypes. There's so much to say on that subject that it's hard, to sum up in a sound bite."
The group spoke in a bit more detail about how they approached Jesy. They said: "One thing we will clarify regarding the blackfishing situation is that Jesy was approached by the group in a very friendly, educational manner." They added that they had this conversation before Jesy left the band.
Jesy broke the Internet when she released her song with Nicki Minaj, when many fans accusing her of blackfishing, which is when a non-black person attempts to appear black.
The singer denied the allegations and claimed to not be wearing any tan in the video. She said that she gets tanned quite easily and that has always been the case for her.
She did mention that she did not intend to offend anyone with her video. "I personally want to say that my intention was never, ever to offend people of colour with this video and my song because like I said, growing up as a young girl, this is the music that I listened to.
