This decisive move follows a troubling trend where nearly £4 million worth of watches were stolen in London's West End in the six months leading up to October 2022.

The city's reputation as a crime hub, especially in the West End, has prompted the Metropolitan Police to adopt unconventional tactics to address specific challenges.

The undercover operations, showcased in dramatic CCTV footage, reveal officers posing as ordinary citizens targeted by criminals enticed by the allure of luxury timepieces. The two covert initiatives, developed with precision tactics, focus on key times and locations notorious for watch thefts. Data analysis points to a concentration of these crimes in London's West End, particularly between 11 am and 4 am, when criminals often target individuals leaving nighttime venues, taking advantage of vulnerable situations.

The choice to spotlight Rolex watches in these operations is not arbitrary. Rolex, a symbol of status and luxury, is a frequent target for thieves due to its high market value and desirability. The specialised knowledge possessed by these criminals enables them to identify and target individuals with valuable timepieces.
