Michaela Coel has won an Emmy for her writing on BBC's 'I May Destroy You.' She did not only write the series, but she created, produced, directed and even starred in the show herself.
The series focuses on a young woman who is dealing with the intense trauma of a previous sexual assault. This story is based on an experience from Coel's personal life.
In the touching speech, Coel said: Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn't comfortable.
I dare you — in a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to in turn feel the need to be constantly visible, for visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success
Do not be afraid to disappear from it, from us for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence. ... I dedicate this story to every single survivor of sexual assault.
Coel's speech is being praised by many, with one Twitter user saying: "Michaela Coel's Emmy speech was really beautiful and much needed."
Another user said: "Michaela Coel's speech gave me chills"
