NIGERIA’S FIRST OLYMPIC CYCLIST, ESE UKPESERAYE, BORROWS BICYCLE FROM GERMAN TEAM TO COMPETE AT PARIS 2024

Ese Ukpeseraye, the trailblazing Nigerian cyclist making history as the first to represent her country at the Olympic Games, faced unexpected challenges during her Olympic debut in Paris. The 25-year-old athlete, who competed in the women’s road race on August 4, revealed in a candid tweet that she had to borrow a bicycle from the German cycling team in order to compete, highlighting the difficulties she has encountered in her Olympic journey.

Ukpeseraye’s participation in the women’s road race ended prematurely, as she was unable to complete the event and did not register a score. However, this setback did not deter her from continuing to represent Nigeria in subsequent events. On Wednesday, Ukpeseraye competed in the Keirin and Sprint cycling events, finishing sixth in the first round. Unfortunately, her Olympic run in these events also ended without qualification as she fell short in the repechage later that day.

The Nigerian cyclist took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her experiences, describing how she was called to participate in the Keirin and Sprint events on "short notice" and found herself without the necessary equipment. "Due to the short notice, I had to compete at the Keirin & Sprint. I had no bicycle to race with on the tracks," Ukpeseraye tweeted. In a heartening display of Olympic sportsmanship, the German team stepped in to lend her a bicycle, allowing her to compete despite the difficult circumstances.

Ukpeseraye’s story is one of resilience and determination. As she prepares for her final event on Friday, her journey is a testament to the camaraderie and support that define the true spirit of the Olympic Games. Despite the challenges, Ukpeseraye remains focused on representing Nigeria with pride and determination, showing that the Olympic dream is about more than just winning—it’s about overcoming obstacles and embodying the spirit of global unity and sportsmanship.
