Rashford and Kaluuya talk Racist Euro Aftermath

Footballer Marcus Rashford and Actor Daniel Kaluuya appeared on a US show, The Shop, and gave their interesting takes on the racial aftermath after the 2020 Euro championship.

Last July the country became united at the prospect of winning the Euro Cup for the first time since 1996. However, the loss of three penalties by black men in the final against Italy resulted in an influx of verbal racial attacks on and off of social media.

The same crowds that had been cheering for Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka throughout the entire competition were very quick to hurl racial abuse at them once they were deemed responsible for the loss of the tournament. Speaking on the matter one year later, Rashford said that he did not think the same treatment would be given if the penalty shots were missed by white players. Despite this, fans questions whether the footballer was defending the racist hate when he spoke about the fans.

He said:"They just reacted to how they felt. Whether it was three white guys or three black guys, that's how they felt".He goes on to compare the situation to a time when white player, David Beckham was receiving death threats during his career.

Fans speculated whether Rashford was excusing the fans' behaviour particularly when he said, "It happens. But they just want you to win", which can be perceived as a justification for spouting racial abuse at the same black players that had brought them close to winning the cup.Daniel Kaluuya somewhat intercepted Rashford and stated that the behaviour was simply just toxic.

He says the situation makes him feel "conflicted" with supporting England. He continued by reminiscing his childhood days when white children or adults would say something that placed a barrier between them due to being different races.

He said that the Euro cup final aftermath was a reminder of when he was younger and was "trying to get closer to the identity of being English" before something happened or was said that reminded him of "the gap" between himself and this country. Fans have largely resonated with Kaluuya's say on the matter as the shift from supporting the players to handing out racially charged abuse was shocking to many.
