Sadiq Khan vows to commit £3 million to plant more trees in London

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan pledges £3 million towards planting trees in and around London following forest fires due to the heatwave.

The heatwave saw the UK rise to record temperatures (40 degrees).

Khan stated, "As Mayor, I will continue my bold action to preserve and increase tree coverage across the capital as we build a better, greener and more sustainable London for everyone."

Khan emphasises how climate change is the leading cause of the increasing temperatures across the nation.

In a statement released, the Mayor added "The climate emergency is the biggest global threat we face today and we know that it doesn't impact all Londoners equally, with communities suffering poverty, deprivation and health inequalities more likely to experience the worst effects of flooding, overheating and poor quality air."

He adds, "As Mayor, I will continue my bold action to preserve and increase tree coverage across the capital as we build a better, greener and more sustainable London for everyone."

This follows as the London Fire Brigade was hit with scenes which haven't overwhelmed them since the Second World War.

Head of London Fire Brigade, Andy Roe, "I saw stuff this week that I had not expected to see as a London firefighter."

The pledge includes an £800,000 top-up for a community grant scheme, £1 million pounds for street trees, £320,000 for tree packages for community groups and schools, and a million pounds to create shady groves in areas of high heat risk.
