Authorities have launched a criminal investigation following the shocking vandalism of 85 graves in the Muslim section of Carpenders Park Lawn Cemetery in Watford, Community leaders and those affected suspect it to be an Islamophobic hate crime. Many of the damaged sites are believed to be the resting places of infants and young children. Hertfordshire Police confirmed the incident and have since increased patrols in the area.
Wadi Funeralcare, which supports families at the cemetery, expressed its devastation, calling the incident a "heartbreaking desecration." The organisation revealed that "some graves were subjected to unspeakable acts of disrespect." Inspector Will Rogers-Overy stated that senior officers are actively working with local community leaders to support those most impacted. “In the coming days, we will further engage with the Muslim community, who have been especially affected by this horrific crime,” he said.
Although located in Watford, the cemetery is managed by Brent Council. Council leader Muhammed Butt offered his sympathies, saying, “Our hearts go out to the families whose loved ones’ graves have been desecrated. It appears this was a targeted act, possibly driven by Islamophobic intent." He added that the council would restore the damaged name plaques and work to return the cemetery to a place of peace and reflection as soon as police complete their investigation.
Describing the act as "barbaric," Abbas Merali, a Conservative councillor from Three Rivers District Council, condemned the attack. “These vile actions have caused profound distress to grieving families and sent shockwaves throughout the community,” he said. Wadi Funeralcare shared that the discovery was first reported by a mourning family who had recently laid a loved one to rest. “Their grief and pain resonated deeply with all of us,” a spokesperson said.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police are continuing to appeal for any information that could help bring those responsible to justice.
