Social Housing Activist, Kwajo Tweneboa Says "Hundreds of Cockroaches Came Out" of a Child's Bedroom

Social housing campaigner, Kwajo Tweneboa, said that when he visited a property in Lewisham, "hundreds of cockroaches came out" as he lifted a child's bed.

The activist posted videos to Twitter of him giving a tour of the new build that was built by L&Q and showing the extremely poor conditions of the property. A leak causing mould, damp, and hundreds of cockroaches infesting the home were the problems shown.

The mother of the children said: "My mental health is damaged but don't want to say anything in case they take my kids." She added: "My kids are scared."

After the video went viral, Tweneboa appeared on LBC Radio to highlight the poor living conditions in social housing and that they need to be improved as soon as possible. Entrepreneur and Dragons' Den star, Steven Bartlett, pledged to donate "10,000 to Twenenboa and to mentor him. As a result, Tweneboa said: "It has been confirmed an hour later by the CEO of L&Q the family will now be permanently rehoused."

Tweneboa has been campaigning and raising awareness of social housing conditions due to his experience with poor social housing. The 23-year-old was living at the Eastfields Estate in south London, in a flat which at the time had no ceiling in the main room, moldy walls, an infestation of vermin, water streaming through light fittings, and asbestos. At the same time, his father had been living with stage 4 oesophageal cancer and sadly passed away in January 2020.

The housing association, Clarion Housing Group, would not listen to his pleas. After speaking out on Twitter, Clarion repaired the property. Tweneboa decided to help out local residents who were experiencing problems in their flats. He put leaflets through all 463 doors on the Eastfields estate, a 1970s-built warren of mainly three-story flats in Mitcham. He now campaigns tirelessly for better living conditions.
