Rapper Stormzy has been honored with an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Cambridge, recognising his significant philanthropic contributions. Beyond his chart-topping music career, the 31-year-old, real name Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., has launched numerous initiatives in sports and the arts. He founded #Merky Books, a publishing imprint championing Black British authors, and recently co-purchased AFC Croydon Athletic, aiming to transform the football club into a vital community hub.
Joining Stormzy in receiving honorary doctorates this year is esteemed choral composer John Rutter, along with notable figures such as American activist and professor Angela Davis, actor Simon Russell Beale, former Supreme Court justice Mary Arden, Nobel Prize-winning economist Oliver Hart, biologist Maria Leptin, and Olympic gold medalist Katherine Grainger, who serves as chair of UK Sport and chancellor of the University of Glasgow.
The honour comes shortly after Stormzy's win for Best Rap Act at the Brit Awards. However, the "Blinded By Your Grace" artist has been faced with controversy in the past few weeks. His advertising partnership with McDonald’s sparked backlash due to the fast-food chain’s connection to Israel, drawing criticism from those who view the deal as conflicting with his vocal support for Palestine. Responding to the outcry, Stormzy reassured fans in a lengthy Instagram post, stating, “I understand it must feel disappointing and disheartening when it seems like someone you’ve championed has compromised their beliefs for commercial gain, but this isn’t the case here.”
Stormzy's ties with Cambridge date back to 2018 when he launched the Stormzy Scholarship, providing funding for two Black British students annually. In 2021, the program expanded to support 12 students per year in collaboration with HSBC. This marks Stormzy’s second honorary degree, following his 2022 recognition from the University of Exeter for his efforts in higher education philanthropy and widening participation.
