The met announced on Thursday that there will be "Prolonged periods" of snowfall possible at higher elevations in parts of Scotland and northern England and Wales at the end of the week.

According to meteorologists, most areas in the country could see some snowfalls from Friday to Sunday.

Up to 20 inches (50cm) of snow have been forecast over the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands. In the North East, forecasters said up to 3 inches (8cm) could fall. Light snow showers could also fall in the Midlands and the South East.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: "We've got an unsettled period of weather over the next few days, with wind warnings out for Scotland and Northern Ireland to begin with on Friday.

"This will extend to the whole of the UK apart from London and the South East on Saturday, with strong winds expected.

He also added that there may well be temporary spells in other areas across northern England and Wales, in areas like the Pennines and Snowdonia, though this is unlikely to be heavy enough to settle.

Storm Arwen is set to move across the UK bringing with it 75mph winds which could cause travel disruption and damage to buildings.

The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for parts of northeast England and Scotland from Friday afternoon, lasting until Saturday morning.

The RAC has advised drivers to prepare for strong gusts by slowing down and being "very careful" when passing high-sided vehicles or cyclists.
